Artistic appropriation has been used as an extension of existing art throughout history. Picasso based his justification for appropriation on traumatic events which led him to believe that the artistic geniuses of past artists were reincarnated into him. In early Brazil, Colonialists appropriated the use of the sacred Tupi feathers into paintings. I appropriated Botticelli’s Birth of Venus using today’s technology by transforming her into a multi-colored subject with geometric shapes. I wonder what Botticelli would think?
